Martin Clifford Lehman, b. 16 March 1883, d. 22 December 1963, was a gifted, respected Mennonite Church (MC) leader. One year after he and Lydia Leichty were married (1905), they began a 25-year missionary career in India, 1906-1930.
With insight M.C. Lehman wrote about the relationship between the Indian and American Mennonite church, world conditions and their impact on missions, rural education in India, the realities of caste in family life, and theologians like Barth. From 1912-1924 he was associate editor of Christian Schayah. His PhD dissertation (Yale, 1933) examined the religious significance of 19th century author Harishchandra; his Mission Study Course (1939) clarified Mennonite Church work in India.
For a year following November 1939 and again after the spring of 1941, M. C. was with Mennonite Central Committee in Europe for relief work. His pen again informed Mennonites of the history and principles of relief work—in the spirit of Christ; offered a bibliography of resources; described the misery of uprootedness and disease and the suffering caused by inadequate food, shelter, and clothing; and called on North American Christians to respond to these needs with prayer and materials.
