Limburg (Limburg, Belgium)
Limburg is a town in the Belgian province of Limburg, near the German border, where a number of Anabaptists were found shortly after 1530, followers of Melchior Hoffman. On 7 March 1536 five Anabaptists from the villages of Montenaken and Heukelom in the duchy of Vroenhoven were arrested and brought to Limburg, where after trial and torture they were burned at the stake about 17 March 1536. They were Johan Bevers, Heine Krokarts (called Vastarz), and the wife of Sevrin Raermakers with her son and daughter. All these martyrs had been baptized by Jan Smeitgen of Maastricht. A congregation founded here in the course of time had to endure persecution several times. In 1566 it numbered about 30 members. It held its meetings in a forest near Limburg. Soon after 1566, it may have dissolved either because of persecution or because the members moved elsewhere.
