Van Lochem (van Loghem, van Loghum) is a Mennonite family of the Netherlands, living at Enschedé, province of Overijssel, since before 1572. Until about 1700 it was also found at Burgsteinfurt, Westphalia, Germany, which apparently was its original residence. Later branches of this family are also found at Almelo, Deventer, Winterswijk, Amsterdam, and other Dutch towns. It could not be ascertained when this family turned from Catholicism to Mennonitism, but at least in 1626 Dries van Lochem of Enschedé was a Mennonite, as were his children and their descendants. They usually were businessmen and textile manufacturers. The sons of Lambert van Lochem, Herman (1695-1782) and Jan van Lochem (1691-1766), were the founders, in 1728, of a large textile plant at Enschedé (half-linen and later cotton). Some members went into the magistracy, e.g., Hendrik van Lochem (1774-1843), who published some volumes of poems, and his son Hendrik van Lochem (1808-1881), both of whom served as town clerk of Deventer. Jan van Lochem of Enschedé (1774-1829), a textile manufacturer, was burgomaster of Enschedé, 1818-1829. Many members of the van Lochem family served the Mennonite Church as deacons. By marriage they became related with a number of well-known Mennonite families, such as Stenfort, Warnaars, Blijdenstein, Willink, Hofkes, Paschen, Naber, ten Cate, Bavink, Nieuwenhuis, Eppenhoff, van Delden, van Dalen.
