Loesche, Georg Karl David (1855-1932)
Georg Karl David Loesche (1855-1932) was a meritorious Austrian church historian who studied at the universities of Bonn, Tübingen, and Berlin. In 1880, he became pastor of the German church in Florence, Italy, in 1885 instructor at the University of Berlin, and in 1887 professor of church history on the Protestant faculty of the University of Vienna. Among his numerous publications his Geschichte des Protestantismus in Oesterreich (3rd edition, 1930) deals especially with the Anabaptists, as do also his articles "Zur Geschichte des Protestantismus in Oberösterreich" and "Tirolensia" in Nos. 45 and 47 of the Jahrbuch der Gesellschaft für die Geschichte des Protestantismus im ehemaligen und im neuen Oesterreich. For 40 years he was the editor of this periodical, which became very important for the study of the history of Protestantism in Austria. He also published articles by other authors on the Anabaptists in Austria. He made a lasting contribution to the study of the Austrian Anabaptists.
