Andrew J. Mast was born in Holmes County, Ohio, on 10 June 1873. Because of his father's early death he was reared in the home of his uncle, Andrew Mast, who was an Amish minister. About 1894 he went to Arthur, IL, and then to Gibson, MS, where a small Amish colony was just being started. There he was married on 26 October 1896; on 24 October 1897, he was ordained to the ministry and on 4 June 1899, bishop of the colony. Five years later he with his family moved to Arthur, IL, where he served as bishop until his death on 17 March 1949. He was an outstanding and very influential Old Order Amish leader.
