Michael (Kleinmichel) Matschidl, a Hutterite chosen as deacon in 1539, and as preacher in 1542, was captured at Ortenburg in Carinthia, Austria, with his wife Lisel and Hans Gurtzham. After a cross-examination, in which they acquitted themselves with credit, they were taken to Vienna. Here they were put into a prison with Hans Staudacher, to the great joy of both. After Staudacher's execution, concerning which Matschidl wrote a letter on 5 December 1546, in Moravia, he and Gurtzham remained in prison three years. Then a fire broke out, and the prisoners were freed. Matschidl and his wife reached Moravia uninjured, and he died there in 1553 at Altenmarkt. He wrote several epistles, which were preserved in Pressburg.
