Mercken, an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake on 23 November 1566, at Gangelt in the duchy of Jülich, Germany, just across the Dutch border. At least one other woman died with her; an old chronicle indicates that a number of Anabaptists were executed here at the same time. Mercken was (re) baptized about 1550 by Theunis van Hastenrath at Langenrade in the district of Born, now Dutch province of Limburg. After her baptism she is said to have moved to Lübeck, Germany, with Palmen (i.e., Peter Palmen) and Heilcken (the wife of Jacob, of Heel).
