Michiel (Gerritsz), an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake at Breda, Dutch province of North Brabant, in August 1571 (not 1572, as is stated in Martyrs Mirror). Michiel was an uncle of Cornelis de Gyselaer, arrested with Michiel and executed some time before him, and was married to the widow of the martyr Valerius de Schoolmeester. He refused to take an oath and during his trial and torture gave some information on his life. He had been baptized six years previously at Middelburg by Joachim de Suyckerbacker (Joachim Vermeeren); he had later lived at Zierikzee and at the time of his arrest he was living at Princenhage near Breda. He possessed three books, a New Testament printed by Nicolaes Biestkens, a copy of the Offer des Heeren, and a volume of letters by the martyr Jacob de Keersmaeckere (Jacob de Rore). Michiel was apprehended with some others on 5 August 1571 when a Mennonite meeting in Klundert was surprised by the officials. He remained steadfast and willingly suffered martyrdom.
