Maximilian Joseph Garnerin, Count von Montgelas (12 September 1759-14 June 1838), a statesman of Bavaria, Germany, was appointed state and conference minister on 21 February 1799 by Elector Maximilian Joseph. His influence was determinant in the change in the political system of Bavaria. It is due to his progressive views that the Mennonites were granted full citizenship upon their request in 1801 and that the right of redemption (see Jus Retractus) passed against them on 29 April 1726 was annulled on 17 August 1801.
