Neeltje Jans, an Anabaptist martyr, was drowned at Leiden, Holland, on 13 November 1554. In the sentence she is said to have associated with heretics, obviously Anabaptist groups; she did not believe in the Catholic doctrine of the Mass, and would have been (re)baptized if there had been an opportunity. Neeltje was sentenced to be burned at the stake if she should persist in her heresy. From the fact that she was drowned it may be inferred that she recanted.
