The North Star congregation at Hyas, Saskatchewan began services in 1979, and formally organized in 1980. The first building was occupied in 1980. David Penner is considered the founding leader of the group.

The congregation started when five families moved from Manitoba to the Norquay area. Five more families arrived in 1980. David Penner from Ste. Anne, Manitoba arrived in June 1980 to serve as the first local minister.
  
In 1985 there were 40 members; in 2000, 87. The congregation has been affiliated with the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. The language of worship is English.

A vacant home on John Penner's property served as the first meeting place. Soon property was purchased north of Hyas, and a church building erected in time for the 1980 school Christmas program.  
  
North Star also operates North Star School.

The North Star Church of God in Christ, Mennonite congregation in Hyas, Saskatchewan, Canada was established in 1979 with John Penner as the first leader.
