Cornerstone Community Church (Macon, Mississippi, USA)
The Mashulaville Mennonite Church near Macon, Mississippi, USA, began in 1958 when David Z. Weaver of the Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions held a Bible school for the Choctaw People at Mashulaville, Mississippi. The following year his family moved to Mashulaville to lead the mission outreach. His work received support from the Burton Mennonite Church in Ohio as well as the Eastern Mennonite Board. Because of this link, Mashulaville initially was part of the Ohio and Eastern Mennonite Conference of the Mennonite Church (MC). In 1979 it became part of the new region Gulf States Mennonite Conference.
The mission workers at Mashulaville also helped to start a church at Nanih Waiya in 1961.
Growth at Mashulaville remained slow, especially as many Choctaw moved to the Pearl River reservation with its greater opportunities. Also, self-awareness of Choctaw culture increased.
The Mashulaville Mennonite Church changed its name to Noxubee Mennonite Church (after the county name) in the mid-1970s. In 1993 it changed its name again to Cornerstone Community Church.
Sixty percent of delegates in the Gulf States Mennonite Conference voted to withdraw from Mennonite Church USA in November 2014. This percentage fell short of the two-thirds vote that was required. Cornerstone Community Church was among the congregations that then withdrew from the Gulf States Mennonite Conference in 2015. It subsequently joined the Good News Fellowship, a regional denomination with roots in the Lancaster Mennonite Conference.
