Jan Persijn, a Dutch Mennonite preacher, b. 19 August 1787, at Harlingen, studied at the [[Amsterdam Mennonite Theological Seminary (Kweekschool)|Mennonite Seminary]] in Amsterdam 1807-12. He accepted the pulpit at [[Hindeloopen (Friesland, Netherlands)|Hindeloopen]] in 1813, and was then called to the Mennonite congregation in De Rijp in [[North Holland (Netherlands)|North Holland]] in 1816. He preached here nearly forty years, retiring in 1855. He preached the dedicatory sermon in 1864, when the church was remodeled, using as his text Psalm 84:2-5. Persijn was untiring in his efforts for the congregation and did a fruitful work. He died as the result of an accident at [[Arnhem (Gelderland, Netherlands)|Arnhem]] on 1 May 1861, and was buried in De Rijp. Some of his sermons and other historical works were published; e.g., <em>Een Viertal geschriften betr. de Doopsgez. Gemeente in de Rijp</em> (Hoorn, 1857). He was married to M. A. M. Sepp.
