Pieter van Male, who may have been related to the Mennonite van Male family of Flanders, later found at Haarlem, Holland, was 39 years of age and a native of Ghent. He had been arrested before 7 January 1562, but, as the Inquisitor Titelman complained, the trial had been postponed because the head bailiff of Ghent and the bailiff of Den Oudburg disagreed concerning their competence in this case.
