The Portage Evangelical Church began services in 1959, and formally organized in 1961. The first building was occupied in 1964. D. K. Schellenberg is considered the founding leader of the group. The congregation originated through outreach by the Evangelical Mennonite Conference.

In 1965 there were 18 members; in 1975, 44; in 1985, 82; in 1995, 90; in 2000, 101. The congregation has been affiliated with the Evangelical Mennonite Conference. The language of worship is English.

The congregation's address is 502 5th Ave. W., Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 0E6. (204) 857-4146. The church is located at 6th St. and 5th Ave. Youth Pastor Les Kroeker served in 2002 as a congregational leader.
