Proentgen, an Anabaptist martyr, wife of Karel Tancreet, was put to death with eleven other Anabaptists at Ghent, Belgium, in 1559. This meager account found in van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror can be amplified by information published by Verheyden from the records. Peronne Witgans (her official name) was a native of Belle (Bailleul) in Flanders. Her execution took place on 5 July 1559, at seven o'clock in the morning. She was burned at the stake with five other martyrs, while on 4 July four others, ar­rested several days earlier, had been burned at the stake, among whom was Karel Tancreet, Proentgen's husband. These martyrs are commemorated in a hymn, "Ick moet ein Liet beginnen" (I must begin a song), found in the Lietboecxken.
