Johann Quiring, a Mennonite teacher and elder in Russia, was born at Fessendorf near Marienburg, West Prussia, Germany, on 12 September 1851. In 1855 his parents settled at Köppental (Trakt settlement), Samara, Russia. He obtained his teacher’s certificate in 1870, upon completion of the course at the Marienkirchenschule, Saratov. He taught at Köppental 1870-89, and after the school was reorganized into a secondary school (Ministerialschule) he was instructor in Bible there 1898-1911. He served on the school board 1884-1911.

On 25 October 1881, Johann Quiring was elected minister and in 1884 elder to succeed David Hamm. Quiring was a very gifted and successful teacher and preacher and became known far beyond his own settlement. He was active in the work of the Bundeskonferenz (General Conference of Russian Mennonites), of which he attended many sessions and served as chairman for three years. He also administered baptism and the Lord’s Supper in the neighboring provinces of Ufa and Orenburg and made a trip to St. Petersburg in behalf of all the Mennonites. Jacob Quiring, evangelist, educator, and scholar, who went to America, was his son. Johann Quiring died at Köppental on 9 April 1912.
