Abraham Ruchat (1678-1750), a Swiss Reformed theologian, served as pastor in a number of congregations, and as professor of literature and theology of the Academy of Lausanne, a versatile writer. In 1721-27 he wrote his Histoire de la Réformation de la Suisse, and published it in six volumes at Geneva in 1727 f. It earned for him the title of Father of Protestant Historiography (RGG) in Switzerland. For 1536 the presentation is complete, but becomes more sketchy with each succeeding year: from 672 pages for 1536 to 96 pages for 1537 and 80 for 1538-57. A second edition appeared at Nyon in 1835-38 in seven volumes, "with appendices and a sketch of the life and works of Ruchat by L. Vulliemin." This edition was welcome, for the original covered only the years 1516-36 and was so persecuted by the church board and city council of Bern that the second part, covering the years 1536-66, could not be published in full as planned. The catalog of Calvary says, "The present (second) edition embraces the complete work, the first section ... in four volumes and the previously unprinted section according to the original manuscript in three volumes. Court records, letters, and documents, which were not accessible to the author or which he was perhaps not permitted to publish, are added. Ruchat's work is the first critical book on the Swiss Reformation. A considerable part is occupied by the history of the Anabaptists in Switzerland; the presentation of the history of Anabaptism in Romance Switzerland, in Geneva, Wallis, and Tessin, which is attempted here for the first time, deserves consideration."
