Sawatzky, a Mennonite family name of Slavic origin, originated among the Prussian Mennonites and is found in the church records of Tiegenhagen, Ladekopp, Rosenort, Fürstenwerder and Elbing. As of 1959 there was no information available as to when it first appeared among the Mennonites. The Dutch [[Naamlijst der tegenwoordig in dienst zijnde predikanten der Mennoniten in de Vereenigde Nederlanden|Naamlijst]] lists Han Sawatzky as being a preacher in the Elbing district of the Marienwerder (Frisian) Mennonite congregation. From Prussia the name spread first to Russia and later to North and South America.
