There was a Mennonite Schouten family in the [[Waterlanders|Waterlander]] congregation of [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]] from ca. 1580, where Lourens Jans Schouten was a deacon from 1612, as were some other members of this family. The Schoutens of Amsterdam were engaged in business and were well-to-do. Maerten Schouten was a lay preacher at [[Knollendam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Knollendam]] 1754-ca. 1774.
