Johann Schroeder (1815-1899), the second elder of the [[Grace Hill Mennonite Church (Whitewater, Kansas, USA)|Gnadenberg Mennonite Church]] of [[Michalin Mennonite Church (Volyn Oblast, Ukraine)|Michalin]], Polish Russia, was born in [[Michalin Mennonite Church (Volyn Oblast, Ukraine)|Michalin]] in May 1815, a son of Johann and Rebecca Isaac Schröder. He was baptized in 1833, and elected minister of the congregation in 1848, and ordained elder 17 September 1852 (the <em>Christlicher Bundesbote</em> states that he was elected minister 1843 and elder the following year). He married Helena Nickel on 25 May 1847, and with the entire Michalin congregation he and his family came to America in 1874, settling east of [[Newton (Kansas, USA)|Newton]], [[Kansas (USA)|Kansas]], where he continued as elder of the congregation, which was renamed the Gnadenberg Mennonite Church ([[General Conference Mennonite Church (GCM)|General Mennonite Conference]]), established in 1875 near Newton. Five children lived to maturity. Elder Schroeder died 19 April 1899.
