Shank, Clara May Brubaker (1869-1958)
Clara May Brubaker Shank, teacher, lay leader, rural missionary, and writer, was born 21 May 1869 to pioneering church planters in Missouri. Through the influence of John S. Coffman she attended the Elkhart Institute and then returned home to the Ozark region of Missouri to undertake mission work with her family. Brubaker's message and mission were rooted in late 19th-century Mennonite-evangelical stirrings. She wrote 78 articles for the Herald of Truth and the Gospel Herald between 1886 and 1927. Many of them urged personal conversion followed by nonresistance and nonconformity. She emphasized church unity and Christian witness through daily life. She evangelized through teaching, leadership in Sunday school, and pastoral visitation. At the age of 55 she married church planter John R. Shank and continued in lay ministry in Missouri until her death on 21 September 1958.
