Siemens, Susanna Warkentin (1869-1943)
Susanna Warkentin Siemens, Mennonite pioneer, was born in the Molotschna colony of South Russia on 13 December 1869. She was the eighth of nine children born to Heinrich Warkentin (1833-1888) and Justina Enns (1828-1895). While still a young girl, Susanna immigrated with her family to Canada, where they settled in Rosenhof, Manitoba. In 1889 she married Peter H. Siemens (1867-1914). Susanna and Peter settled in Rosenort, Manitoba where they had 10 children together, seven daughters and three sons. Unfortunately Peter died in 1914. Susanna carried on alone. Over the years that followed Susanna built a new house, borrowed money to purchase more land and with the help of her daughters and sons managed a prosperous farm. Susanna was a woman of courage and determination who was able to weather the hardships and adversities of pioneer life in order to become a successful business woman. She died on 13 May 1943.
