Smit, Hilchen (16th century)

Hilchen Smit (Schmidt), was an elder of the Frisian Mennonitecongregation at Montau, West Prussia, in the second half of the 16th century. About this leader there is only scarce information. He was probably of Dutch descent (his Christian name Hilchen may have been a corruption of the Frisian name Hylke), but he was not among the first Dutch Mennonites who settled at Montau in 1568. The years of his serving are unknown. In 1588, at Danzig, Hilchen Smit, being authorized by the Frisian congregation of Haarlem, Holland, banned Crynvan der Meulen(Vermeulen) and Hans von Schwindern, an elder and preacher of the Danzig Frisian congregation, who were planning a union with the moderate Waterlanders. After 1588 nothing more is known about Smit.
