Stahl, a Hutterite family name, occurred at least as early as 1663, when Johannes Stahl was taken away as a prisoner from Zobelhof, Hungary, by attacking Turks and Tatars; he never returned to the brotherhood. Since then Stahl has been a commonly occurring Hutterian family name, lasting through their migrations from Hungary, to Transylvania, to Rumania, to Russia, and finally to North America in 1874. It has been found mainly on Bruderhofs in South Dakota, Montana, Manitoba and Alberta, but probably also occurs on Bruderhofs in other states and provinces as well.
