Jan Jansz Starter was born in Amsterdam in 1594 of English Brownist parents. He joined the Waterlander Mennonites, was a bookseller at Leeuwarden in Friesland in 1614-20, back in Amsterdam in 1621, and soon after accepted an administrative office in the army of Ernst von Mansfeld. During a military campaign he met his early death near the Hungarian border in September 1626. Starter was an artist, poet, and engraver. His best-known work is Friesche Lusthof, a volume of poems published at Amsterdam in 1621 (reprints 1622, 1624-25, 1627). Concerning his connections with the Mennonite Church there is not much information. They probably were rather loose. Starter's Menniste Vryage (Mennonite Courtship) satirizes the "fijne" Mennonites.
