Sudermann, Hermann (1857-1928)

Hermann Sudermann (1857-1928), a noted German author, was born at Wadziken in East Prussia, Germany, 30 September 1857. His father was a member of the Elbing-Ellerwald Mennonite congregation, but was expelled when he married a Lutheran. Hermann Sudermann's Frau Sorge (1887) pictures his unhappy youth in his poverty-stricken home. At an advanced age he wrote Das Bilderbuch meiner Jugend (Stuttgart and Berlin, 1922), in which he recalls the unforgettable impressions of the Mennonite services he attended with his aunt, life on the "Hof" of a wealthy Mennonite uncle, picturing the Prussian Mennonites as competent, honest, but gloomy, and the loan of a considerable sum of money by a distant relative in Russia for Hermann's education.
