Ruardus (Rieuwert) Tapper(t), (1485-1559), a Roman Catholic priest and professor at the University of Louvain, inquisitor in the Netherlands and from 1537 papal head inquisitor. He was active against all kind of "heresy" and also had a hand in many lawsuits against Mennonites. Tapper was narrow minded, dogmatic, and cunning, and was greatly hated and feared by the people. By his sly methods and his ruthlessness he did great harm to the Reformation cause though he did not succeed in extirpating the Protestant and Anabaptist - Mennonite movements.
