Toews, Cornelius C. F. (1867-1928)
Cornelius C.F. Toews, Mennonite teacher and prosperous farmer, was born 1 April 1867 in South Russia to Kornelius Toews (1841-1907) and Justina Friesen (1837-1909). Cornelius was the fourth of 10 children, two of which died, one in infancy and one as a child. He was eight years old in 1876 when his family immigrated to Canada, where they settled in the village of Bergfeld on the East Reserve in Manitoba. On 21 May 1888, he was baptized and in 1890 married Katharina Friesen (1870-1946) in the Chortitzer Mennonite Church. Together they had 10 children, two of which died as infants.
Cornelius C. F. Toews left Bergfeld to teach in the village of Strassburg. It was there that he met his wife and filed for a homestead 26 August 1890. His success as a farmer was evident in the large new house he built for his family in 1916. In addition to his success as a teacher and farmer, Cornelius was also musically gifted. Cornelius C. F. Toews died in 1928. He was remembered by family and students as a conscientious farmer, and a strict but compassionate teacher and father.
