Tyumen Oblast (Russian: Тюме́нская о́бласть) had a population of 3.26 million (2002). It and the city with the same name, Tyumen (Russian: Тюме́нь) are in Asiatic Russia. The city is located 125 miles (200 km) southwest of Tobolsk and 190 miles (305 km) east of Yekaterinburg. Established in 1585, it became the first Russian town east of the Ural Mountains. Tyumen district was created in 1945 with Tyumen city as capital. Many Mennonites were sent to this area during the period of exile and evacuation from European Russia.
