Veere, an old town on the island of Walcheren, Dutch province of Zeeland (population in the late 1950s, ca. 1,100; 1,520 in 2001; coordinates: 51° 33′ 0″ N, 3° 40′ 0″ E), was in the 15th and 16th centuries an important seaport. Anabaptism is found here as early as 1534, in which year some Anabaptists fled from the town to evade persecution. A few of them are said to have gone to Münster in Westphalia. In 1537 a number of Münsterite Anabaptists, whose names are unknown, were executed at Veere. Adriaen Wouters, of Schiedam, after recanting was executed here in 1539 because of his "bad Anabaptist ideas." In 1561 Mennonites are said to have lived in Veere, but it could not be ascertained for lack of documents whether there was a congregation here at that early date. In 1569 the Mennonite Jan Ysbrants was banished by the magistrates. About 1600 a small Mennonite congregation existed at Veere, of which Laurens Adrianesz de Brie was a preacher in 1614 and Adriaen Vervondel and Maerten Roelants preachers or deacons in 1665. It belonged to the Flemish branch and died out shortly after 1671, the few remaining members joining the neighboring church of Middelburg.
