Gerbrand Vissering, born 2 June 1813, at Groningen, died 27 June 1869, at Jisp, unmarried, was a son of [[Vissering, Jacobus David (1774-1846)|Jacobus David Vissering]] and his second wife Baudina Cnoop. He studied theology at the Univer­sity of Groningen and the [[Amsterdam Mennonite Theological Seminary (Kweekschool)|Mennonite Seminary at Amsterdam]], thereupon serving as pastor at Zuid-Zijpe 1837-1842 and Wormer-Jisp 1842-died 1869. Vissering was a somewhat solitary man and a Greek scholar; his sermons were not very popular. In 1854 he pub­lished a new translation of the New Testament from the original Greek (Amsterdam, 1854, repr. 1859). For this scholarly work he received in 1860 an hon­orary Th.D. degree from the Groningen University. His New Testament translation was also much ap­preciated by the Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church, who recommended his version and appoint­ed him on a committee to prepare a new Dutch Bible to replace the antiquated <em>Statenvertaling.</em>
