Vlaming family
Vlaming (Vlamingh, Flaming, Flaminck, Fleming, Flemming, Flämmig, Flamig), a Mennonite family name. There was formerly a Vlaming(h) Mennonite family at Amsterdam, now extinct, of which Hans Vlamingh was a member. Cornelis de Vlaminck (Cornelis Jansz), according to Mellink a revolutionary Anabaptist, executed at Zwolle in 1535, was an Anabaptist at Amsterdam. Hans Hendricksen van Linth, called Hans Vleminck, and his wife Linken, who had both fled, were banished 12 October 1575, because of Anabaptism. These Vlamings are apparently unrelated; the name simply means that they stemmed from Flanders (modern Belgium). A Vlaming (Flemming) family is also found among the West Prussian Mennonites, at Montau as early as 1636. Hans Vlaming was preacher of the Nieschewski church from 1737; he later moved to Deutsch Kazun, where he also was a minister, serving until ca. 1795. Heinrich Flaming moved from Franztal, West Prussia, to Molotschna, Russia, in 1825. There are also some Flamings in America.
