Johann W. Voth was born 27 January 1863, the son of Wilhelm Voth (1832-1914), elder of the Nikolaifeld Mennonite Church in Zagradovka Mennonite settlement, and Margaretha (Wiebe) Voth (1836-1900). Johann married Anna (Kroeker) Neufeld (5 October 1850-1 May 1891) on 29 January 1885 and they had three children, of which one died young. Johann married for the second time on 3 November 1891 to Katharina Reimer (22 August 1870, Schoenau, Molotschna, South Russia – 22 January 1942, Siberia, Russia) and they had 15 children, of which one died in infancy. Johann died 24 January 1942 in exile.

Johann was a farmer, and in 1907 he was elected minister of the Nikolaifeld Church in Zagradovka, South Russia, and as elder upon Franz Martens' resignation in 1908. He was well-intentioned but not a leader. In 1921 he had to resign as elder and minister, and lived quietly in retirement. Nothing is known of the end of his life other than that he and his wife died in exile.
