North Newton],  #2007-0038 '']]     Philipp Wiebe: chairman of the [[Agricultural Association (South Russia)|Agricultural Association]] of the [[Molotschna Mennonite Settlement (Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Molotschna Mennonite settlement]], made a significant contribution as a successor of [[Cornies, Johann (1789-1848)|Johann Cornies]]. Philipp was born 29 September 1816 in Baerwalde, Prussia, the sixth of sixteen children of Philipp Wiebe (b. 1778) and Gertrude (Dueck) Wiebe.  Philipp married Aganetha Cornies (11 December 1819, Ohrloff, Molotschna, South Russia – 18 September 1858), daughter of Johann Cornies (1789-1848) and Aganetha (Klaassen) Cornies (1792-1847).  Philipp and Aganetha had four children, with three living to adulthood: Johannes, Philipp and Agnes.  Philipp died 15 September 1870 in Ohrloff, Molotschna, South Russia.

As chairman Philipp inherited the supervision of the [[Agriculture among the Mennonites of Russia|agricultural]] or [[Business among the Mennonites of Russia|economic]] and the cultural or [[Education Among the Mennonites in Russia|educational]] aspects of the settlement, including the many religious problems of the time.  When Johannes Cornies died in 1848, Wiebe continued to promote a higher level of education, regular attendance at school, higher salaries for teachers, better school buildings, and regular teachers' conferences. The school age was determined to be from six to fourteen, and teachers' conferences became obligatory in 1850. Because of ill health, he had to resign as chairman of the Agricultural Association. In 1869 he became the first chairman of the "[[Molotschnaer Mennonitischer Schulrat|Molotschnaer Mennonitischer Schulrat]].”  

Wiebe, as a son-in-law of Johann Cornies, inherited some of his large estates, [[Yushanlee (Molotschna Settlement, South Russia)|Yushanlee]] and a part of Tashchenak. He acquired an estate north of the Sea of Azov from a certain Kampenhausen. He had to cope with the general problems of land distribution to the [[Landless (Landlose)|landless]] and the founding of new groups such as the [[Mennonite Brethren Church|Mennonite Brethren]] and the [[Temple Society|Templers]]. His son, Johann Philipp Wiebe, born 14 October 1849, continued in the footsteps of his father and grandfather; he married the sister of [[Warkentin, Bernhard (1847-1908)|Bernhard Warkentin]] in 1871 and became instrumental in the transplanting of hard winter [[Wheat|wheat]] from his estates to the prairies of [[Kansas (USA)|Kansas]].
