Jan Williams (1533-88), married Aagt Pieters in 1589 and was the father of 4 sons and 5 daughters. In 1557 after the separation of the [[Waterlanders|Waterlanders]] he was chosen elder by the stricter party and ordained by [[Dirk Philips (1504-1568)|Dirk Philips]]. He lived in Hoorn, where he and Lubbert Gerrits (after 1559) were influential leaders. He was one of the arbitrators of the dissension in [[Franeker (Friesland, Netherlands)|Franeker]] in 1567, which led to the division between the [[Frisian Mennonites|Frisians]] and the [[Flemish Mennonites|Flemish]]. As a member of the Frisian group he continually strove for peace, one result of his efforts being the agreement of Humster in 1574. He was the progenitor of the Sleutel family.
