Hans Wucherer, an Anabaptist martyr who, after brutal torture, was burned at the stake at Burkhausen, Bavaria, in 1537 together with Hans Bartel, who is also known as Bartel Synbeck, a weaver of Kaufbeuren. In prison he wrote a moving letter to his wife, which is reprinted in the Hutterite Chronicle, bidding her farewell and admonishing her "to remain true to the brotherhood and to God."
