Zurkinden, Nikolaus (1506-1588)

Nikolaus Zurkinden, secretary of the council of Bern, Switzerland, in 1534, and magistrate (Landvogt) in Bonmund and Nyon in 1537-44, was one of the outspoken advocates of tolerance in the Reformation period. In a letter to Calvin written on 10 February 1554, he advocated a milder treatment of the Anabaptists.
