Adriaen van 's Gravenhage, an Anabaptist martyr and a linen weaver by trade, was seized at Vught near 's Hertogenbosch in the Dutch province of North Brabant with eleven other men and women.  All of them were poor except the goldsmith Paulus van Druynen, the preacher of the congregation, and his wife. Adriaen and Paulus were burned at the stake together with Michiel Stevens van Oosterhout, a potter, and Jan Blok of Gent, a weaver, on 9 September 1538. Two days later several others were executed, including Jan van Capel. On 14 September another execution took place. The Martyrs Mirror names the seven judges who sentenced them and the godparents chosen by the court for the forcible baptism of the nine-month-old son of Paulus. Michael was the deacon of the congregation, which was Melchiorite, (i.e., followers of Melchior Hoffman). This is supposedly the first execution in the northern half of the Low Countries at which an attempt was made to prevent the victims from speaking at the site of the execution by gagging them with a knotted rope.
