Bender, an Amish Mennonite family name, is first recorded in the Amish community near Waldeck (later near Marburg) in Hesse-Cassel, Germany in about 1790. The family was, however, likely present earlier in this same group which came to Waldeckabout 1730 via Wittgenstein, probably from Alsace and originally from Switzerland. This group consisted of families such as Guengerich, Schlappach, Otto, Shetler, Schwartzentruber, and [[Yoder (Ioder, Joder, Jodter, Jotter, Yoeder, Yother, Yothers, Yotter)|Yoder]], who in 1830-1860 settled in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and later in Johnson County, Iowa. Bender is not a Swiss name but is fairly common in the Middle Rhine region, and apparently entered the Amish group in Germany. Progenitor Daniel, who died about 1842 at Langendorf, Germany, did not come to North America, but his second wife and her seven sons did, as did one son and daughter from his first marriage; they arrived between the years of 1830 and 1851 and all but one of them settled in the region of Springs, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. From these immigrants descended a large number of Old Order Amish, Conservative Amish, and Mennonite families, chiefly located in the original settlement and in Johnson County, Iowa (Kalona). Members of the family included Bishop Daniel H. Bender, Deacon George L. Bender, Preacher Harold S. Bender, E. C. Bender, Paul Bender, as well as numerous Amish and Conservative Amish bishops, among them Bishop C. W. Bender and his nephew Bishop Nevin Bender. Another progenitor, Jacob Bender, from the same Hesse community, settled in 1832 in the Amish community west of Kitchener, Ontario; many of his descendents, including Bishop Jacob M. Bender and Preacher Jacob R. Bender, have lived in this community.
