Bethel Deaconess Hospital (Newton, Kansas, USA)
Bethel Deaconess Hospital of Newton, Kansas, was a 100-bed general hospital owned and operated by the Bethel Deaconess Home and Hospital Society, fully approved by the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, and the Kansas State Board of Health.
The original plant, which had room for 30 patients, was dedicated and opened for service on 11 June 1908, with Sister Frieda Kaufman as the first superintendent. From that time to 1950 three additions were made to the main building and a separate building was erected for the school of nursing.
The hospital maintained an open medical staff and strove to maintain the best in modern equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. It also strove to render the nursing care to the patient in a spirit of Christian love and devotion. It was the aim and object of the hospital to maintain high professional and ethical standards in its service which was rendered to all regardless of race, creed, color, or of financial standing.
The Bethel Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing was an integral part of the Bethel Deaconess Hospital and was organized in 1908, soon after the hospital was opened.. It was accredited and approved by the Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education in the State of Kansas. It was the purpose of the school of nursing to select Christian young women with an aptitude for nursing and to assist them to develop this aptitude in an environment that would develop Christian life and character, with special consideration given to those who were preparing for some definite field of Christian service.
The Bethel Deaconess Hospital merged with the Axtell Christian Hospital, founded in 1887, to form the Newton Medical Center on 1 January 1988. The Newton Medical Center is non-denominational, and is governed by a community-based board.
