Bijl family
Bijl is a Dutch Mennonite family, descending from Pieter Hansz Bille, b. 1668, at Ribe, Denmark, a Lutheran who settled in Amsterdam. One of his descendants, Pieter Bijl, b. 1807 at Hoorn, d. 1855 at Amsterdam, became a member of the Mennonite Church and married Maartje Hartog, daughter of Jan Hartog, Mennonite minister at Beemster. Two of their sons were Mennonite ministers: Adrianus Jan Bijl (1837-1904) served the congregations of Wormerveer-Noord and Steenwijk, and Pieter Kornelis Bijl (1852-1894) those of Staveren, Edam, Wormerveer-Zuid, and Leeuwarden. Jan Adrianus Pieter Bijl, b. 1882 at Steenwijk, son of Adrianus Jan Bijl, was also a Mennonite minister and served the congregations of den Horn (1914-1926) and Nes op Ameland (1926-1930). In this year he retired because of mental illness. Many members of this family too were found in the records of the Mennonite churches of Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden, and Assen, serving as deacons.
