Emmius, Ubbo (1547-1625), a Frisian historiographer, professor of history and rector of the University of Groningen, Netherlands, whose most important work, Rerum frisicarum historia (1596-1615), is a valuable source for Mennonite history. He was a violent opponent of David Joris, concerning whose life and family relationships he gives important information in Ein grundtlick Bericht Van der Lere und dem Geist des Ertzketters David Joris . . . (1597, Dutch edition, Middelburg, 1599). In 1600 a refutation of the book appeared in Wederlegginghe, vande grove onbeschaemde vnde tastelicke Logenen van Vbbo Emmen . . . tegen het leven vnde leere van Dauid Iorissoon, written by Andreas Huygelmumzoon (Bernardus Kirchen). Emmius prepared a detailed answer (442 pages) which he had translated from the "Saxensche sprake" (East Frisian literary language in which the first book against Joris appeared) into the Dutch language and published in 1603 under the title Den David-Jorischen Gheest in Leven ende Leere, breeder ende wijdtloopigher ontdect en grondlicken verklaert, tegens den vermomden schaemtloosen D. Andreas Huygelmumzoon (The Hague). According to Emmius, Huygelmumzoon was Bernardus Kirchen, a physician and son-in-law of David Joris. Emmius seems to have restricted his opposition to David Joris and his followers. Although he must have had contacts with the Mennonites he does not seem to have written against them. He himself, a native of Norden, East Friesland, where he became rector of the school, had to leave his country because as Reformed he was opposed by the Lutherans of the city.
