Grafeneck, Klaus von (1502-1575)

Klaus von Grafeneck (Graveneck), a frequently named magistrate of Württemberg; in Blaubeuren 1539-1542, in Kirchheim below Teck 1543-1550, in Urach 1551-1575. He wrote the report of Michael Sattler's death in Rottenburg, Ayn newes wunderbarliches geschicht von Michel Sattler zu Rottenburg am Neckar sampt 9 mannen seiner lere und glauben halben verbrannt und 10 weyber ertränkt (1527; there is a copy of this book in the Wolfenbüttel library). He suffered at the hands of both opposing parties in the Peasants War. Klaus von Grafeneck is said to have arisen at midnight every night for prayer and Bible reading in his later years.  He died on 16 January 1575.

His two sisters, who had been nuns in Königsfelden, left the convent to marry. It is very likely that Klaus von Grafeneck sent his account of Sattler's martyrdom to one of his brothers-in-law, Balthasar Maler, a printer in Zürich, who had it printed in 1533. In 1533 Grafeneck married Margarethe, the daughter of Peter Scher of Schwarzenburg. She became a devoted follower of Schwenckfeld as was her entire family. She was a sister of A. Blaurer's brother-in-law, Peter Scher, Jr. She was the channel for the sending of Paul Glock's letters to Moravia. Her daughter Christine also apparently aided Glock. A report given by, his nephew Josua Maler (d. 1599) indicates that the Grafeneck home was open to Zwinglians, Schwenckfelders, and Anabaptists. It is very probable that Paul Glock received kinder treatment than was customary because of Grafeneck's intercession for him. Grafeneck employed him in gardening in Dettlingen and sent him on errands to distant places. This freedom ended when Glock engaged in conversation on religious matters with the peasants.
