Heatwole, Reuben J. (1847-1921)

Reuben J. Heatwole, born 27 February 1847 and died 7 June 1921, the son of John S. and Nancy Heatwole, was born at Rockingham County, Virginia. On 27 February 1873 he married Margaret Kilmer, and was the father of seven children—Henry, Anna, Sarah, Susanna, Mary, Martha, and Lydia. In early manhood he took up a homestead in Marion County, Kansas. In later years he with his family lived in Harvey County, and McPherson County near Windom, Kansas. He was an outstanding active Mennonite Church layman on the Kansas and Colorado frontier. He taught singing schools, helped organize Sunday schools and churches, served on the Evangelizing Committee, and he assisted many ministers materially in preaching appointments and evangelistic services. His missionary zeal was a positive influence of permanent value to central Kansas and Colorado Mennonite (Mennonite Church) congregations.
