William Hembling,1818-1904

Hembling, a "preaching appointment" (MC) in Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, Ontario. William Hembling from England homesteaded here about 1831. He was ordained deacon of the Mennonite Church in 1858. The North Woolwich appointment was first known as Hembling. It is presumed that services were conducted in his home before the building of the church in 1872. The meetings were listed at four-week intervals. About 1875 Hembling associated himself with the Mennonite Brethren in Christ movement. After the schism of 1889 the North Woolwich church was used exclusively by the Old Order Mennonites. The Mennonite Church (MC) built its meetinghouse a few miles south at Floradale in 1896. Early ministers were Abraham W. Detweiler (1828-1912) and Joseph Gingerich (1842-1912). Peter Bowman became deacon in 1876.
