Hess, Abraham Lincoln (1861-1920)
Abraham Lincoln Hess was born 10 April 1861 at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, died 30 December 1920 at Hesston, Kansas, the son of John R. and Annie E. Stauffer Hess. On 17 August 1883, he was married to Anna B. Pfautz. From 1884 until his death A. L. Hess lived on a farm near what is now Hesston, at first called Eliven. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Mennonite Church near Hesston until the congregation in Hesston was organized, when he transferred his membership to the Hesston Mennonite Church. He assisted in the founding of the Hesston State Bank, of which he was president for some time. His practical faith in young people was expressed by his contribution of 80 acres of land for the beginning of Hesston College and Bible School. He was buried in the Pennsylvania Cemetery.
