Insel Chortitza (Russian: Ostrov Khortitsa), one of the oldest villages of the Mennonites in Russia, was founded in 1789 in the Chortitza settlement, province of Ekaterinoslav. The inhabitants belonged to the Kronsweide congregation, which had (in 1905) 1,955 members and 1,055 children. It was also known as Ostrovo Chortitza.
