Jannetgen Matthijsdochter (d. 1552?)

Jannetgen (Janneken) Matthijsdochter, an Anabaptist martyr of whom there is only scarce and questionable information. She is not found in van Braght, Martyrs' Mirror. According to the sentence books, Jannetgen Matthijsdochter was sentenced at Leiden, Dutch province of South Holland, on 21 November 1552, to be drowned because of Anabaptism, but it is strange that her name is not found in the song "Eylaes, ick moch wel suchten Dat nu buert so groot ellent" (Alas, I must lament that now comes about so great misery), written by Adriaen Cornelisz to celebrate the death of some martyrs, who according to the sentence book were sentenced to death at the same date as Jannetgen Matthijsdochter. Nor is she found in another hymn celebrating some martyrs of Leiden of 1552, "Ick mag wel droeflijck singen, in desen tijt van noot" (I must sadly sing in this time of distress). Both hymns are found in the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren of 1563 and following editions. Perhaps the puzzle of Jannetgen Matthijsdochter can be solved in assuming that her execution was for some reason postponed.
