Joachim Christian Jehring (1691-1729), a Lutheran preacher at Reepsholt in East Friesland,  was the author and editor of an important source of Mennonite history, the book Gründliche Historic von den Begebenheiten, Streitigkeiten und Trennungen, so unter den Tauffgesinnten oder Mennonisten von ihren Ursprung an, bis auf das Jahr 1615 vorgegangen, anfänglich von einem Mennonisten selbst, der sich I. H. V. P. N. genennet, in holländischer Sprache beschrieben, jetzund aber . . . übersetzet und mit einigen Anmerckungen, Zugaben und Vorbericht, worinnen von denen nachhero gefolgten Streitigkeiten und jetzigen Zustande derselben gehandelt wird, vermehrt von Joachim Christ. Jehring mit einer Vorrede von Jo. Francisco Buddeo (Jena, 1720). (See Buddeus.)

This book of 336 pages has the following contents: pp. 1-73 are an introductory account of the history and doctrine of the Mennonites, in which Jehring defends them against false charges; pp. 74-188 give a German translation of the book named in the title of Jehring's book, which was written by the anonymous I. H. V. P. N., Anfang und Fortgang der Trennung der Taufgesinnten (original title, Het beginsel der scheuringen . . . , reprinted in Samuel Cramer and Fredrik Pijper. Bibliotheca Reformatoria Neerlandica, 10 vols. The Hague: M. Nijhoff, 1903-1914 VII; see Beginsel); pp. 189-221, Obbe Philips' Confession; pp. 222-226, Menno Simons' letter to the church at Franeker; pp. 226-229, Menno Simons' letter to the church at Emden; pp. 230-232, closing comments of Karel van Gent; pp. 232 and 233, Wahrhaftiges Geschichts-Register; pp. 234-236, additions which serve to explain Mennonite history and doctrine: (1) Doctrinal statements of Uko Walles; (2) Verdict of the consistorium at Groningen concerning Uko Walles; (3) Reply of Uko Walles and his followers to the council of Groningen; (4) Baptism and communion among the Ukowallists; (5) Baptism among the Mennonites (with brief catechism and formulary); (6) Information concerning a dispute of the Mennonite church at Emden (1691); (7) Public prayers of the Mennonites; (8) Formulary for the installation and ordination of preachers among the Mennonites; (9) Agreement and union reached by the Mennonites in 1664; (10) Intercessory letter written by the States General to the canton of Bern in 1710; (11) Information concerning disputes in the church at Amsterdam and Rotterdam; (12) Concerning the Münsterites (in Latin); it is the pamphlet by A. Corvinus. This view of the contents indicates its importance, which has not lost its significance even today.
